There are a lot of great resources on the web to help you
teach your lessons. One such resource is
of course Youtube and there are some amazing transcriptions of some of the
masters’ solos available on Youtube. You
can find some solos by Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane and
others. Some of the really engaging
videos are the ones that are animated. John
Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” and Charlie Parker’s “Confirmation” are two that
follow the solo exactly note for note and really bring together the visual and
musical experience. It really gives you
an understanding of the level of mastery that these musicians reached by watching
how effortlessly they play complex passages with such passion and emotion. Not to mention the fact that these solos are
created on the spot. It just goes to
show that if you truly master you instrument, one day maybe even your solos
themselves will become compositions.
