Winston “Mankunku” Ngozi

South Africa’s John Coltrane, Winston “Mankunku” Ngozi is along with Hugh Masekela and Abdullah Ibrahim (Dollar Brand), one of the country’s most well-known musicians.

His hit tune 1968 "Yakhal' Inkomo" won him “Jazz Musician of the Year” in 1968 by Castle Lager.  He was offered a scholarship by Duke Ellington to come to America but he refused saying that he loved his country and “didn’t want to leave it.”
