Cynda Williams Interview at Bowie State University
Here is an excerpt from an interview I did with Cynda
Williams at Bowie State University. She
talked about the beginning of her career after doing musicals in high school in
Chicago and then coming to NY to get on the big stage. She talks about her dogged determination to
get on the film “Mo Better Blues” and how she would use creative visualization
and rehearse the conversation with Spike Lee about her being in the movie.
What she said, which is not on tape, was how she sat in the
casting office hallway early in the morning and waited for the casting director
to come out. She waited and waited and waited.
People would ask her what she was there for and if she was OK, she
replied politely. After about several
hours the casting director came out and told her that auditions were actually
the next day but because she had waited so long and everyone who had come up to
her was routing for her, they would audition her then. As they say, “The rest is history.”
